Meeting Minutes - May 1, 2018
May 1, 2018  ―  Revolution Day in some places.

President Alex opened the meeting on time and we enjoyed Ruth’s playing of the piano for our singing.

Our greeter today was Michael Spears ― who else was supposed to be with him?? ― and he later introduced our guests.  And here I failed to write their names down, but we had someone from the South club, and very pleasant young lady and our speaker, Eva Friesen.

Dr Ian Burgess introduced Dr Syed Amed as a new member.  Syed is from Parkistan and is an Audiologist who has worked in different parts of the world before settling in Canada.  He has 2 sons, and his wife is a member of Rotary in Islamabad.  Paul Gaudet read the induction of Syed Amed to Rotary and welcomed him to this club.

Minute People were:
•   Bev told us about all our members and spouses who were getting to be a year older this month.  The anniversaries totaled 206 years!  The anniversaries of joining the club were also very impressive.
•   Hank reminded us that he has tickets for the June 2nd Lobster Fest.
•   Hank also told us the next Grillin’ and Servin’ will be at Nakiska on June 23rd ― please sign up.
•   Garth Plunkett gave a short ‘motivational talk’ on upcoming Spruce Meadows parking events, and thanked Garth Sabirsh, Paul and Jim for all the hard work they do staffing these events.  He presented the club with a cheque from Spruce Meadows for the recent parking event.
•   Rob Wolfson presented Fred Jesse with $60 for winning the NHL draw.
•   Paul reminded us to sign up for the June 5th meeting ― the topic is Cyberfraud against Seniors.
•   Peter Bickham presented Al Pettigrew with the large Cribbage Trophy.

Bob Gentles won the 50/50, and was also the SAA ― he has to come up with some better jokes for us as we don’t understand subtle ones.

The Youth evening meeting was successful with 90 guests attending, and many thanks go to Connie who kept it in order.  Without her what would we all do?

Our speaker was Eva Friesen, President and CEO of the Calgary Foundation, who was introduced by Paul Gaudet.

The Calgary Foundation
Our speaker was Eva Friesen, President and CEO of the Calgary Foundation, was introduced by Paul Gaudet, who told us all about her interesting and prolific past, and that was almost as long as her talk.

Eva has had an extensive background in the Not for Profit sector, and as the President and CEO of the Calgary Foundation, it is standing her in good stead.

This Foundation started with only thousands of dollars, and with good management has grown to over $900 million in endowments.

Nowadays the trend towards philanthropy is different.  The loss of trust of the Millenials in institutions and worry/mental health increases in the past decade, bullying, computers and cell phones seems to have led towards compassionate giving ― Humbolt tragedy ― rather than the way money was donated in the past.
